Monthly Discussion: 12:20 - 1:30pm

Sex is an important topic to discuss again and again throughout the child and teen years. Parents can feel unsure about what information to provide, and when. After all, it's not just talking about sex - it's also about hormones, puberty, attraction, respect, boundaries, and so much more. Additionally, for adopted and fostered children, children who have experienced trauma, and those conceived using donor-assisted reproduction, these issues can be even more complicated. Imagine what may go on in the minds of children and teens that they might not be able to articulate:

  • Where do I come from? (some younger children don't realize they had a birth father as well as a birth mother).
  • Sex is supposed to be for two people who love each other, but what about my biological parents?
  • If I was rejected early on, how do I know I won't be rejected again?
  • When someone breaks up with me or isn't attracted to me, I feel abandoned and unwanted again.
  • I've already been more sexually active than my parents realize, and I'm afraid to tell them.

Though it can feel intimidating or uncomfortable, talking about sex presents an opportunity for authentic and normalizing conversation, accurate information (rather than just playground or social media talk), and emerging comfort for both adults and kids in talking about intimate issues. Join us to learn practical information and share experiences.

Parent Support Meeting: 1:30-2:30pm

Immediately following our Monthly Discussion, we'll gather in two smaller groups to share experiences and ideas in a supportive environment. One group will focus on general parenting concerns while the other will discuss parenting children with attachment and behavioral issues. There is no extra fee for this portion of the meeting - just register for the Monthly Discussion; those who cannot stay for both meetings can just come for one or the other.

Parent Support Meeting is open to all parents and caregivers, including waiting/prospective parents.
