THIS MONTH'S TOPIC: CULTIVATING CONNECTIONS THROUGH ART THERAPY
Art Therapy is a unique form of psychotherapy; it can help people to better understand themselves and how they function as individuals and/or part of a family or group system. Through making visual images (paintings, drawings, modeling etc), clients can express thoughts, explore feelings, get in touch with and find an outlet to express inner experiences (ie) memories, imagination, and repressed emotions in alternative way. For adopted children, art may provide an alternative means for them to express themselves when words may not work.
Our guest speaker, Ms. Julia Byrne, will briefly introduce basic concepts that underpin the professional practice of art therapy and how art therapists may work with clients to strengthen emotional well being. Parents will then have an opportunity to taste the process of art therapy in an experiential exercise, followed by suggestions for parents to carry out art activities with their children at home that would further help to cultivate healthy connections with their adopted children.
This meeting is also open to mental health professionals and students with advanced reservation; please contact us via email to reserve a seat.
